For the Best

Remember the footsteps that led nowhere?
A maze consumed by a maze — contorted
by a mind decaying — full of tears
and vacant holes that tore apart a whole

in a shadow on a bench surrounded
with burdened cumulous clouds of old storms
that choked out the way of the burnt lighted
path we could have chosen to see our warm

fire place across from the couch cozied
up on the wall underneath your painted
canvas crafted when we met all frenzied,
and our falling chaotic worlds collided.

Our darkness combined made us weak.
That’s why I had to leave —
to set you free.
